SCIENTIFIC NAME: Yucca gigantea

KNOWN AS: Yucca elephantipes, Yucca guatemalensis, Yucca Cane, Spineless Yucca, Giant Yucca

CLIMATE (LOCATION): Central America | Tropical (semi-aird)

DESCRIPTION: These are unique indoor trees that have spikes on the top of their branches. People sometimes mistake them for palm trees. They are slow growers, but they will take up a lot of space in your home, which is good because you need something to brighten up a corner.

Yucca Care

Watering
Water your soil when it is about 50% to 100% dry. Try to avoid watering your plants too much. You may need to water less often in winter or in areas with less light.
Lighting
Yucca plants thrive in bright, indirect light with a few hours of direct sunlight.
Humidity
Yucca plants like a little humidity, but they don't like it too humid. You can give them a mist every now and then to help clean the dust off their leaves.
Temperature
This plant loves the heat! It will grow a lot in temperatures over 70°F. It can also tolerate lower temperatures, but it won't grow as much.
Toxicity
Yucca leaves are poisonous to pets and humans. If ingested, the leaves will cause irritation in the mouth and stomach, and may also lead to vomiting.
Propagation
You can propagate a Yucca by using a stem or stub cutting. If you cut off the bottom of a leggy plant, you can try both methods. Cut off a few small 2-4 inch sections from the bottom of the bare stem, making sure to leave a decent section on the top (or apex) with the tuft of leaves. With the top piece, remove the lower leaves to ensure a clear stem before rooting in water or another medium. With the small chunks of stem, you can simply lay them horizontally in potting mix, only pushing them into the soil about halfway. Soon these stub cuttings will take root and leaves will sprout!
