Lighting

Light Requirement: Medium Light (Medium Indirect Light) to High Light (Bright Indirect Light); Low Light Tolerant

Calathea Medallion plants prefer bright, indirect light. It is best to avoid direct sunlight as it can damage the leaves. A good location for this plant is near a north or east-facing window, where it can receive bright, filtered light for several hours a day. You can also place your calathea near south or west-facing windows, but be sure to leave some distance between the plant and the window. If the light is too low, the leaves may lose their variegation and become dull. On the other hand, if the light is too strong, the leaves may burn or curl up. It's important to strike a balance between light and shade, and to adjust the plant's position accordingly if it's not receiving enough or too much light.

Indoor Calathea Medallion plants need consistent moisture to thrive, but it's important to avoid overwatering. To water this plant correctly, wait until the top inch of soil is dry to the touch, then water thoroughly until the water drains out of the bottom of the pot. Be sure to empty any excess water from the saucer underneath the pot to prevent root rot. Calathea Medallion plants also prefer high humidity, so misting the leaves regularly or placing a humidifier nearby can help keep them healthy. It's also a good idea to use filtered or distilled water, as these plants are sensitive to the chemicals found in tap water. By following these watering techniques and keeping a close eye on your plant's needs, you can help your Calathea Medallion thrive and add a beautiful touch to your indoor plant collection.

Temperature

Preferred Temperature: 60º - 80º

Calathea medallion plants thrive in warm and humid conditions. The ideal temperature range for these plants is between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). It's important to avoid exposing them to temperatures below 60°F (15°C) as they are sensitive to cold and can suffer damage. Additionally, it's important to keep them away from drafty areas with temperature fluctuations as it can lead to stress and negatively impact their growth. Maintaining a consistent temperature and humidity level will ensure that your Calathea medallion thrives.

Humidity

Preferred Humidity: 50 - 60%; Moderate Humidity

Calathea Medallion plants thrive in environments with high humidity levels. To keep your plant healthy and happy, it's essential to maintain a humid environment. You can do this by misting the leaves with water regularly or using a humidifier to increase the moisture in the air. It's also helpful to place a tray filled with pebbles and water underneath the plant's pot to increase humidity levels. In addition to maintaining humidity levels, it's important to avoid overwatering your Calathea Medallion. These plants are sensitive to water and can suffer from root rot if the soil is too moist. To prevent this, wait until the top layer of soil is dry before watering and ensure proper drainage in the pot.

Additional Plant Care

Propagation
Calathea Medallion can be propagated by diving the plant and planting different sections separately. First, remove the plant from its pot and gently separate the root ball into several clumps. Be sure each clump has healthy roots and a few leaves. Pot each clump into its own container with fresh potting soil, making sure the roots are covered but the plant's base is above soil level. Water the newly potted plants and place them in bright, indirect light. Keep the soil moist but not soaked until new growth appears.
Toxicity
The Calathea Medallion plant is not toxic to humans or pets. This makes it a safe choice for pet owners or households with small children. With that said, it still makes an awful snack!
Repotting
Calathea Medallion plants should be repotted every 1-2 years or when the pot becomes overcrowded. To repot, select a slightly larger pot than the current one and fill the bottom with fresh potting soil. Gently remove the plant from its current pot, being careful not to damage the roots. If the roots are tightly bound, you may need to loosen them slightly. Place the plant in the new pot and fill in the remaining space with fresh potting soil, ensuring that the plant is at the same level as it was in the previous pot. Water the plant thoroughly and place it in a bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight for a few days while the plant adjusts to its new pot as this can cause undue stress.
Pruning
Calathea medallion plants require minimal pruning, but it is still important to trim off any damaged or dead leaves regularly. It is also necessary to prune the plant if it is becoming too large for its container or if it starts to look too leggy or bushy. To prune the Calathea medallion, use sharp, sterile pruning shears or scissors and cut the stem just above a leaf node. Make sure to cut at a slight angle to prevent water from pooling on the cut surface, this can cause rot. It is important not to remove more than one-third of the plant's foliage at any time, as this can cause stress to the plant. Just pretend you're a plant surgeon!
Fertilizer
To fertilize a Calathea Medallion plant, it is important to use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer that is formulated for indoor plants. During the growing season, which is typically from spring to early fall, fertilize the plant every two weeks. In the winter months, reduce fertilization to once a month. Be sure to dilute the fertilizer according to the package instructions to avoid over-fertilization, which can damage the plant. It is also a good idea to water your plant before fertilizing to assure the fertilizer can spread throughout the plant and doesn't sit in one area.
Soil
Calathea Medallion plants prefer a well-draining, nutrient-rich soil that is slightly acidic with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5. A good soil mix for Calathea Medallion should consist of peat moss, perlite or coarse sand, and a small amount of bark or charcoal. These ingredients ensure adequate drainage, aeration, and moisture retention, which are all essential for healthy growth. It is also important to keep the soil consistently moist but not soaked, as Calathea Medallion plants are sensitive to both overwatering and underwatering, a well-balanced soil will assure not too much water sticks around.
