FAQs: LED Grow Lights for Indoor Plants

Yes. A full-spectrum LED grow light gives indoor plants the light they're missing in dim rooms, north-facing spaces, and winter months. Plants under the right grow light typically show stronger stems, fuller foliage, and steadier growth, and grow lights let you keep plants in spots that would otherwise be too dark.

Not really. Standard household LEDs are designed for how light looks to people, not for photosynthesis, and most deliver little plant-usable light. A true grow light is measured in PPF (photosynthetic photon flux), the amount of light plants can use. The Aspect™ Gen 2 delivers 50 μmol/s and the Vita™ 25.95 μmol/s, far more than a typical household bulb.

Plants use mostly blue and red light, but they grow best under full-spectrum light that includes all visible wavelengths. Full-spectrum white light also looks natural to people, which is why Soltech lights are tuned to warm 3000K white with a CRI of 97–98 instead of the purple glow of blue-and-red grow lights.

It depends on the light and the plant. As a guide for the Aspect™ Gen 2: 12–24 inches for full-sun plants, 24–36 inches for bright-light plants like fiddle leaf figs, 36–48 inches for monsteras, and 48–72 inches for low-light plants. Close-range lights like the Grove™ and Versa™ work best within 24 inches, and the Aura™ within 24 inches.

Watts measure power used, not light plants can use, so compare PPF instead. Modern LEDs deliver far more plant light per watt than older lights: the 36-watt Aspect™ Gen 2 replaces a 225-watt incandescent in brightness. For most single houseplants, a light delivering 20 to 50 μmol/s at the right distance is plenty.

Most houseplants do well with 10 to 14 hours of light per day: 10 to 12 hours for low- to medium-light plants and 12 to 14 hours for high-light plants. Flowering plants often do best on 12 hours on and 12 off. An outlet timer, included with most Soltech lights, keeps the schedule consistent.

For a large floor plant, choose the Aspect™ Gen 2. To convert lamps or recessed cans, choose the Vita™. For shelves and cabinets, the Grove™; for desks, the Versa™; for an ambient lamp that supports nearby plants, the Aura™; and for grow walls or many plants, the Highland™ track system.

What Makes a Good Grow Light?

Plants respond to PPF, the amount of light they can actually use for photosynthesis, not to watts or lumens. Soltech lights are engineered for high PPF per watt and a full spectrum of light, tuned to a warm 3000K with a CRI of 97–98. That means stronger growth, lower energy use, and a room that still looks warm and natural instead of purple.

Pendant, Bulb, and Bar Lights

The Aspect™ Gen 2 is our most powerful pendant, delivering 50 μmol/s from 36 watts with a built-in dimmer. The Vita™ Grow Light turns any E26 lamp or recessed can into a grow light, in a wide or narrow beam. The Grove™ LED Grow Light is a slim 11-watt bar for shelves and under-cabinet herbs that rotates 360° on magnetic brackets.

Tabletop, Ambient, and Track Lights

The Versa™ Tabletop Grow Light puts an adjustable Grove bar on a stand that rotates 310° and tilts 180°, perfect for desks and nightstands. The Aura™ Ambient Grow Light, designed in Italy by Matteo Ragni, is a designer lamp that supports plants within 24 inches. For grow walls and large collections, the Highland™ LED Track Light System lights many plants from a single track, and the International Series Highland™ and International Series Vita™ serve 220–240V countries.

Choosing the Right Light

Start with your plant and your space: how much light the plant needs, and where the light will hang, mount, or sit. Then match the light to the distance; the closer the light, the brighter it is.
